Dental Veneers Transform Your Smile
Natural-looking dental veneers can improve the aesthetics of your smile while providing extra oral protection. They are wafer-thin laminates that are bonded to your teeth, changing their colour, shape, size, or length. Veneers are permanent and can be used instead of a crown if your tooth is strong and healthy.
Benefits of Dental Veneers
- change irregularly shaped teeth
- fix broken, chipped, cracked, or worn down teeth
- remedy gaps between teeth
- protect the underlying tooth
- stain resistant
- get back the confidence to smile
Psychological Benefits of Laminate Veneers
Research has shown that laminate veneer restorations have a positive effect on patients’ self-esteem. Feeling confident when you smile can reinforce positive sub-conscious messages to you and those around you. Wanting to smile freely without embarrassment is a positive health choice rather than vanity. Smiling releases feel-good hormones that help you experience positive emotions and help your body deal with stress and physical pain.

Porcelain Veneers
Tooth-coloured porcelain veneers are wafer-thin laminate shells that are custom-made and placed on the front of the teeth to disguise cosmetic imperfections, improving the appearance and strength of teeth. The advantages of porcelain veneers are that they are stain-resistant and being substantially harder than tooth enamel makes them more resistant to damage than your natural teeth.
Composite Veneers
Direct composite veneers are made of a composite resin material that is directly applied to your teeth. The advantages of composite veneers are that they are easy to apply, repair and remove. The application time is relatively short and minimally invasive.
Dental Veneer FAQs
Custom-made porcelain veneers require two appointments with the dentist.
First preliminary appointment for veneer preparation
The dentist will need to take x-rays and then apply a local anaesthetic in order to shave off about half a millimetre of the tooth enamel. An impression is then taken for the lab technicians to use to design the laminate shells. The dentist will then cover the teeth with temporary crowns as the dental technicians take around 14 days to make the laminates. Veneer preparation takes take around 1 hour to 45 minutes per tooth.
Second appointment for fitting the dental veneers
In the second appointment the dentist removes the temporary crowns and prepares teeth by cleaning them thoroughly and roughening the tooth surface to improve the adhesion of the veneer. The veneers are then attached to the tooth with a special cement, using ultraviolet light to harden it quickly.
- The dentist will help you choose your preferred shade and ensure this matches your teeth.
- Your teeth will be cleaned in preparation of the procedure and the dentist may need to shave off some enamel.
- The enamel of the tooth will be etched to ensure adhesion.
- The adhesive glue will be applied to help the composite resin material stick to your teeth.
- Very thin layers of the composite material will be applied to the surface of your teeth.
- The layers of composite material are cured quickly with ultraviolet light.
- The dentist will shape and smooth the teeth.
Veneers are permanent in that they are irreversible, they are however durable, long-lasting and protect the underlying tooth.
Porcelain and composite veneers can last for decades if treated with care and some patients are able to keep veneers for life.
- Porcelain veneers don’t require any special care, just regular dental maintenance.
- Avoid teeth grinding or clenching
- Brush your teeth twice a day
- Floss your teeth once a day
- Use a professional mouthwash for optimal oral care
- Visit the dentist every 6 months
- Visit the oral hygienist every 6 months
- Composite resin is long lasting but it is not as hard as porcelain or natural teeth enamel.
- Avoid abrasive toothpaste
- Avoid staining food and drink
- Have them professionally cleaned every 6 months
- Regular routine dental maintenance
The main difference between these dental restorations is that a veneer covers only the front of your tooth and a crown covers the entire tooth. Veneers can be used on healthy teeth and crowns are necessary for more damaged teeth.
