Common dental problems such as cavities and gingivitis mostly go unnoticed until it’s too late. Fortunately, most common dental diseases are preventable and are relatively easy and inexpensive to address if detected at an early stage. Dental Check up FAQs

Besides a warm and friendly welcome, a dental exam involves a comprehensive inspection of your teeth, gums, tongue, bite and x-ray results. Dental problems can be easily spotted in x-rays. These findings help us evaluate the integrity of your oral structure and enable us to identify and treat any risks of tooth decay or gum disease.

The dentist will usually take around 30 minutes to take x-rays and examine your teeth. If you have any dental problems such as cavities, tooth decay or infection the dentist will book a longer appointment soon afterwards to treat the problem.

A dentist appointment is a 30-minute examination that does not include teeth cleaning. The purpose of a dental examination is to check for cavities, and tooth and gum health to protect and maintain the integrity of your oral hygiene in the future. Professional Teeth Cleaning takes a full hour and is carried by the dental hygienist who is professionally trained to clean, scale and polish your teeth below the gum line to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

A dental checkup is a single appointment with the dentist. However, for optimal dental health, it is preferable to visit both the dentist and the dental hygienist every 6 months. These are two separate appointments. Professional cleaning with the hygienist is very important for preventing gum disease and tooth decay and the dentist appointment is for examing the health of your teeth and gums. A second dentist appointment will be made if the dentist discovers any problems that require a longer appointment to remedy the problem. For example, cavities that require fillings.

It is recommended to have a dental examination twice a year. These routine dental checkups prevent tooth decay and gum disease, helping you keep your smile for life. Additionally, if left untreated, dental disease can lead to heart disease, stroke, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Maintaining your oral health not only maintains your smile for life, but also helps maintain your overall health in the long run.

Routine dental checkups are non-invasive and painless. Any problems identified in the routine inspection will be fixed in a second appointment, this allows the dentist more time to carefully and gently remedy the problem. Should you require move specialised treatment, be assured that Thompson Dental patients continually remark on the gentle painless dental procedures they continuously receive at our practice.

Our experienced dentists understand that some patients experience dental fear. Thompson Dental is known for the gentle dental procedures, our aim is to ensure that all patients have a pain free dental experience. We encourage you to share your fears with the dentist. Solutions such as sedation dentistry and nitrous oxide (also known as happy gas) are available to all our patients, including children.
